Start Procedure

Saturday, July 18 – Individual start for all classes, 2-minute start interval. For NR classes, start at a freely chosen time.

Sunday, July 19 – For all classes besides Deaf Championships, interval start according to Day 1 loss to the class winner. For NR classes, start at a freely chosen time.

This year, the ESS Kalev Summer Run starts are named after major sponsors – Saku and Skizze. The start name is indicated in the start protocols. Follow the logos on the signs leading to the start and the plastic strips on trees along the way to the start.

Day 1 - Individual Start

All Classes, except NR

• The start interval is 2 minutes for all classes.
• Enter the start area 6 minutes before your start time.
• Judges will check the SI number and bib number for accuracy.
• Start area includes 400 m long marked route, for that competitors have 4 minutes.
• The start takes place next to the bucket of maps. Participants are responsible for taking the correct map.
• Additional legends and tapes are available at the start area, but tape assistance is not guaranteed.
• In Estonian Championships classes M21A, M40 and M45 startlists are according to EOL rules – reversed ranking. (as of 13.july)
• In Estonian Championships classes M21A, M40 and M45 – selected runners will receive GPS-tracker. The list of these runners will be published no later than day before competition. GPS-tracker will be issue in start area.

Day 2 - Interval Start

The Day 2 start protocol will be posted by the organizers on the competition website www.suvejooks.ee and at the competition center immediately after the protocol is ready.

All Classes, except NR and Deaf Championships

• Interval start:
  • The best competitor in the class starts first, followed by others according to their Day 1 loss.
  • Competitors who lost more than 30 min and those without a Day 1 result will start at 2-minute intervals.
• Entry to the start corridor is 3 min before the start time, minute by minute.
  • NOTE! In the start corridor, we strongly request that the order is not changed.
• The start is given according to the start clock ticking on the computer monitor; the start moment is indicated by 1 beep (no pre-beeps).
• The start takes place from the start line; the competitor takes the map with their class identification number from the map bucket (or from the start table under the judge's guidance) within the competition time. The competitor is responsible for taking the correct map.

GPS Tracking

Interval Start Time Calculation

• First competitor's start = class start time + previous day's minutes (without decimals) and seconds.
  • For example:
    • If the winner's time on the first day was 00:45:32 and the table shows the class start time as 10:25:00, they will actually start at 10:30:32.
    • Calculation: 10:25:00 + 00:05:32
• Each subsequent competitor from the same class starts later by their loss to the leader.
  • Those who lost up to 30 minutes on the first day will enter the interval start.
  • Those who lost more than 30 minutes to the leader on the first day will start at 2-minute intervals after the interval starters.

Open Course

For unregistered competitors, there is a traditional orienteering course – you can choose between 3 or 6 km.

Registration for the open course takes place at the info tent in the competition center, where participants will also receive a bib number. Start fee is 15 EUR.

Open course competitors will start from the Saku start. The start time is recorded by the competitor at the start station (similar to daily events).

Control Time

The control time is 3 hours on both days, and 2 hours for the open course.

Bib Numbers

Bib numbers are available at the competition center. Same Bib numbers are used on both days.

Open course participants receive bib numbers from the info tent; the open course has a different number on each day!

Wearing the bib number is mandatory. NOTE! Please bring your own safety pins for attaching bib numbers.

In addition to the number, the bib number includes the competitor's name, competition class, Day 1 start time, and distance to the start along with the start name (Saku or Skizze).

Legends

Legends are printed on the map.

Additional legends and fastening tape are available at the starts, but taping assistance is not guaranteed. Legends are located in the start area.

Only the checkpoint sequence number is on the map!

Marking Rules

The SportIdent (SI) electronic punching system is used. All SI card versions, including SI-Air, can be used. SI-Air is active during the competition. To register a control point visit, wave the SI card over the station or insert it into the station slot and wait for a light and/or sound signal. If the SI card is lost, the result will be canceled.

Rental SI-sticks

Can be picked up from the info tent and returned at the finish on Day 2.

Finish

The finish time is recorded by punching at the finish line. Data from the SI-card is read out in the finish area.

On your last competition day, immediately after reading out the results, you must return any rented SI-cards to the organizers.

The competitor is responsible for the correct reading of the SI card.

NOTE: On first day maps are collected at finish. Maps will be returned to runners after the closing of Starts.

Retirees

Retirees must pass through the finish or notify the finish judge of their retirement immediately upon arriving at the competition center.

Results

Upon leaving the finish area, each competitor will receive a results sheet with their finish and split times. Live results will be displayed on a screen at the competition center.

Live results will appear on the competition website www.suvejooks.ee

Protocols will also appear there.

NOTE: Protests must be submitted to the organizers within 15 minutes after the results are available. Later submitted protests will not be taken info account.

Award Ceremony

The ESS Kalev Summer Run award ceremony will take place on Day 2 based on the sum of the two-day results.
